CPIN Coordinator vacancy

The Consumer and Public Interest Network (CPIN) is seeking a Coordinator to join its team to make sure the consumer voice is heard in British Standards.

CPIN is an independent organization that exists to empower and protect consumers through effective consumer representation in British Standards. Established in 1951, CPIN operates with financial support from the British Standards Institution (BSI) and government, and a dedicated Secretariat based in the BSI Consumer Policy team.

CPIN is made up of more than 50 volunteers, who are trained experts in consumer issues and participate in the development of standards to:

  • highlight key consumer issues
  • make sure that real problems are addressed
  • minimize the risk of consumer harm
  • make a positive difference to consumers’ lives.

CPIN has five priority areas:

Consumer Safety, Digital, Inclusion, Services, and Sustainability.

The Role

CPIN Coordinators play a vital role in managing teams of CPIN volunteers, who represent consumer interests across a wide range of standards – from childcare articles, to vulnerability requirements and even AI. They engage proactively with their representatives to provide guidance and support, as needed, to help them be effective in their roles.

Coordinators work closely as a team to take strategic oversight of CPIN’s work, making sure that CPIN prioritises activity in areas where it is needed most. For example, where consumers are at greatest risk of harm and CPIN can help to drive positive impact.

Coordinators contribute to CPIN governance through close collaboration with CPIN’s Steering Group. They help to inform and support CPIN goals and strategic objectives, and deliver on CPIN’s Mission.

Requirements

Applicants should:

  • Possess enthusiasm for engaging with and supporting volunteers
  • Be passionate about consumer protection
  • Have a good understanding of consumer issues
  • Possess excellent communication skills
  • Be self-motivated and organized
  • Have the ability to think strategically

The role involves 2-3 days per month, which includes monthly Coordinators’ meetings, and regular liaison with your team of Representatives.

*** For more detail, please see the accompanying ‘CPIN Coordinator Role and Responsibilities’ document.

Benefits of the role include:

  • Real world impact - you will play a central role in the creation of standards that are used to improve thousands of products and services.
  • New strings to your bow - involvement in the standards development process is an excellent way to build knowledge, learn new skills and enhance your CV.
  • A stronger network - you’ll work closely with a wide range of experts and stakeholders, within CPIN, the consumer protection landscape and wider world of standards.
  • Introductory training and professional development – we provide the training and support you need to perform this role. No prior experience of using or creating standards is necessary.
  • Honorarium – this is a voluntary role, but you will receive an honorarium to recognize your valuable contribution, and all relevant expenses are paid.
