More about our mission and what we offer.

Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer II with deep systems thinking, data engineering expertise, and a product-oriented mindset to join our Treasury FX function — spanning both the Market Data and Risk Engineering teams.

Our team builds the real-time infrastructure that powers Wise's FX pricing, risk management, and trade execution. We aggregate market data from Bloomberg and Reuters, compute live exposure and VaR, execute hedges worth tens to hundreds of millions of pounds daily, and protect the business from adverse currency movements. Our systems are tier- 1 and serve 50+ internal consumers with sub-second freshness across 50+ currency pairs.

You will be the technical anchor across both engineering teams, owning the architectural direction of 14+ production services, from rate ingestion and distribution, through real-time risk calculation, to automated hedge execution. The primary mission: build Wise's first semi-automated trade and hedge execution platform in close coordination with FX dealers, quantitative researchers, and treasury controllers.

We operate on a strong belief in automation, programmatic implementation, and reusable design. We're looking for people who can step back and think holistically about the ecosystem, but also follow through and help implement the design; drawing on the resources across the rest of the Finance & Treasury tribe.

Our stack is polyglot and modern: Java 21 + Spring Boot 4.x, Python 3.12,  Apache Flink  (streaming), Kafka, gRPC + Protobuf, and Bloomberg/Reuters real-time feeds. This isn't typical CRUD — it's real-time financial infrastructure where a 1bps improvement in hedging efficiency saves millions.

We need a seasoned engineer who can architect streaming data pipelines, collaborate with quants on model productionisation, drive reliability across mission-critical systems, and translate complex business requirements from traders and risk managers into elegant technical solutions.

What will you be working on?

You will own the technical direction and architectural evolution of Wise's FX engineering stack, with immediate focus on:

  • Architecting a semi-automated hedge execution platform,  from exposure decomposition through model-driven hedge proposals to programmatic trade execution on external partners

  • Building real-time streaming pipelines with Apache Flink for portfolio-split exposure computation, tenor interpolation, and hedge lifecycle event processing

  • Evolving our rate infrastructure for 10x throughput with FX Forwards, new corridors, NDFs and work on cross-provider deviation alerting

  • Building production infrastructure for quant models for VaR, beta-adjusted exposure management, dynamic pricing and FRP cancellations.

  • Owning Kafka topology design and schema evolution across the full pipeline: rate ingestion → risk calculation → trade execution → analytics

  • Driving technical roadmap across both teams, mentoring IC2/IC3 engineers, and leading incident response for Tier-1 critical services

Qualifications

We acknowledge that engineers continuously evolve their skillsets, and we are committed to supporting your growth. However, we are looking for candidates who can bring these core skills to the table:

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in financial systems, trading, or real-time data infrastructure

  • Deep expertise in Java (17+) with Spring Boot in high-throughput production environments

  • Extensive experience with Apache Kafka, topic design, schema evolution, consumer group management at scale

  • Strong data engineering skills, building real-time streaming pipelines with Apache Flink, Kafka Streams, or equivalent

  • Proven track record designing and operating distributed systems processing millions of events per day

  • Demonstrated ability to own system reliability end-to-end: SLOs, alerting, incident response, disaster recovery

  • Experience leading technical design of complex multi-service architectures and influencing without direct authority

  • Exceptional product mindset — able to translate business requirements from traders, operations, and quants into technical strategy

  • Track record of mentoring senior and junior engineers and raising team-wide engineering standards

The successful candidate will onboard as the technical anchor for both FX engineering teams, bringing architectural leadership and deep systems expertise while contributing to the transformative impact our platform has on Wise's FX operations.
