Checkout.com is where the world checks out. Our global network powers billions of transactions every year, making money move without making a fuss. We spent years perfecting a service most people will never notice. Because when digital payments just work, businesses grow, customers stay, and no one stops to think about why.

With 19 offices spanning six continents, we feel at home everywhere – but London is our HQ. Wherever our people work their magic, they’re fast-moving, performance-obsessed, and driven by being better every day. Ideal. Because a role here isn’t just another job; it’s a career-defining opportunity to build the future of fintech.

Job Description

Checkout.com is seeking a talented Senior Legal Counsel with a strong UK payments regulatory and product background to join our Legal team. The Senior Legal Counsel will be expected to advise on compliance with financial services and payments regulations, interact with regulators and assist in the implementation of broader regulatory projects and product launches  across the Checkout.com group.

As Senior Legal Counsel, you will work closely with all areas of the business in our offices around the globe. You will need to take a consultative and collaborative approach to solving complex legal and business issues in a fast-moving environment.

As you will be collaborating with all core functions within the company, the successful candidate should be able to handle multiple areas of responsibilities autonomously, demonstrating excellent critical judgment with a hands-on approach. This is a great opportunity to work on a broad range of projects across multiple jurisdictions, learn new areas of law and play a key role in supporting the company’s rapid growth. You will be based in London at our global head office.

You will be joining an expanding legal team in one of Europe's most valuable fintechs. Checkout Legal's mission is to be a legal team that exceeds expectations. We do this by providing pragmatic and trusted advice and balancing risk management by fusing high performance, innovation, collaboration and integrity.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Partner with our Commercial, Product, Treasury, Financial Partnerships and Compliance teams, acting as a real-time legal advisor to understand their needs and help find creative solutions to achieve business objectives

  • Support relationships with regulators on license-related matters, including potential de novo applications

  • Review payments product structures, flows and terms to ensure compliance with legal requirements

  • Advise on payments regulatory matters, including compliance with payments laws and related regulations across our different jurisdictions

  • Advise on broader regulatory requirements applicable to financial institutions, including with respect to group regulatory change projects

  • Advise the business on market expansion, researching and evaluating new territories and applying for new licenses or expanding the scope of existing licenses

  • Advise key business functions on new regulatory developments impacting our operations, products and contractual commitments

Qualifications

  • Qualified solicitor/lawyer (8+ years PQE) with strong post-qualification experience either in-house or in private practice

  • Strong understanding of legal principles applicable to payments in the UK, including the payments ecosystem and payments regulatory and licensing strategy/execution, and to broader financial institutions

  • Previous FinTech, start-up, payments and/or financial institution experience is desirable but not essential

  • Excellent time management skills and experience managing a diverse workload and competing stakeholder demands

  • Ability to handle and deliver on numerous high-priority projects concurrently

  • Comfort with ambiguity, constant change, and a fast-paced culture

  • A practical, solutions-oriented focus to solving legal challenges

  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as needed, flexing the approach as the matter requires

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate and explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely
