About Us

Ascent is a design-led software, data and cloud business that specialises in advanced analytics and AI. We are an engineering business. We design, build and manage cloud-native products, solutions, platforms & experiences on Azure.

Our pan-European community of engineers, architects, data scientists and digital consultants helps customers take on challenges and opportunities, so they can do something new, or do existing things better.

From global insurance, pharma, healthcare and retail to smart home devices, space exploration and cricket - we get to work with some of the sharpest minds in the brightest businesses.

About the role

As a Data Engineer at Ascent, you get to work at the heart of our customer businesses to understand their data problems, identify needs and develop solutions to help them. You’ll join our practice of market-leading data professionals and work typically as part of a cross-functional team on customer projects, supporting their journey through digital transformation, or helping them do existing things in a much better way.

Your responsibilities

As a Data Engineer, you’ll work to design and create pipelines that transform data in a scalable and repeatable way. Producing efficient code that automates the process of ingesting and cleaning the data, you then develop and apply appropriate mechanisms so that data flows toward target data sources as required.

Depending on the project, your daily responsibilities could be quite varied, but typically our Data Engineers:

  • Understand, build and develop ETL and data integration solutions using a wide array of technologies and data sources
  • Work with big data components and migration strategies
  • Work with cloud-based infrastructure (Google, AWS, and Azure) for hosting data solutions and applications.

You’ll also get called on from time to time to support Ascent marketing colleagues, pre-sales teams, and key partners with some subject matter expertise in data engineering. We’re adding to a strong team of data experts in our business, so this is a great time to join us as we’re growing in our core locations across the UK, Malta, Bulgaria, and Portugal.

Skills and experience required

We’re looking for people with good data engineering skills, and you’ll ideally bring with you:

  • Proven role experience in developing ETL and data integration solutions
  • Good knowledge of the Azure data engineering stack - Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Lake, Azure Blob, Cosmos DB
  • Capability in using Databricks, Snowflake, and/or Spark
  • Good experience in general programming – ideally Python

You’ll have experience working with data warehouse solutions, extracting and processing data in various ways using off-the-shelf tools and open-source tools. You’ll also be really familiar with working with Linux or Windows operating systems and version control systems (Git).

We work in Agile methodologies as a preference, so being comfortable working in this way is important. You should be comfortable in a customer-facing situation where you’ll need to communicate clearly and effectively in English – often with people who might not be as technically experienced, so good written and verbal English skills are important. You should be someone who is passionate about team collaboration and knowledge sharing, with the passion and drive to achieve goals and targets. We value empathy in our colleagues, and it’s important you bring a growth mindset and a willingness to learn and adapt.

Working at Ascent

At Ascent we promote a healthy work-life balance by offering flexibility in where you work. We also promote well-being and provide access to Well Being Coaches.

Your development and learning will be taken seriously, and we'll support your professional development with training and certification, with regular feedback and review. It is a fun, supportive and modern workplace where we really live by our company values of Empathy, Energy and Audacity! Ascent also offers a variety of benefits in each of our countries.

Ascent is an equal opportunities employer. We take intentional steps to ensure inclusion and belonging are something real here, not just something we talk about. No person will be treated less favourably because of their gender, pregnancy, and maternity status, marital or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, race, nationality, ethnic origin, age, religion or belief, or disability status. If you require any reasonable accommodation, please let us know when you apply.
