Purpose

The QA Engineer is responsible for the quality of software development and deployment across Causeway's product and platform engineering teams. Causeway is building toward a fully automated QA function, and this role sits at the heart of that transition. The QA Engineer is expected to be a practising automation engineer, writing, maintaining, and extending automated test suites as a primary output, whilst retaining the breadth to apply manual testing where appropriate. The balance will shift progressively toward automation as the team and tooling mature.

The key areas of responsibility for the QA Engineer include:

  • Quality Engineering

  • Technical Innovation

Key Responsibilities

Quality Engineering

  • Design, write, and maintain automated test scripts across System, Integration, and Regression levels, with automated coverage as the primary measure of test delivery.

  • Apply manual testing where automation is not yet in place or is not appropriate, with a clear plan to automate those areas over time.

  • Analyse user stories and use cases for validity and feasibility, contributing to refinement and raising quality concerns early.

  • Detect, document, and track software defects and inconsistencies, clearly documenting replication steps and relevant context.

  • Determine and agree on quality procedures, standards, and specifications and ensure that they are met at all times.

  • Estimate effort required to accomplish testing requirements and ensure that schedules are met.

  • Ensure that technical products are tested accurately, based on best practice standards, and on time to support business objectives.

  • Ensure all code is reviewed before changes are checked into the main branch.

  • Make suggestions to improve and support the testing lifecycle, actively contributing to the team's automation coverage and practices.

Technical Innovation

  • Contribute to the design and development of the team's automated test frameworks, helping to build a suite that is maintainable, reliable, and integrated into the CI/CD pipeline.

  • Champion automated testing practices within the squad, promoting a shift-left approach and advocating for quality throughout the development process.

  • Apply quality engineering principles throughout the Agile product lifecycle.

  • Collaborate closely with Software Engineers, Delivery Leads, and Product Owners to embed quality across the full development process.

  • Provide clear testing documentation and artefacts, ensuring automated test coverage and results are visible and well-maintained.

  • Communicate regularly with the QA community, Software Engineers and Engineering Leads.

  • Take responsibility for personal development, with a focus on deepening automation capability and staying current with emerging tools and practices in software quality engineering.

  • Continuously strive for innovative solutions and make suggestions for improvements that benefit the business in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity.

  • Be willing to listen to and support colleagues, devoting time to sharing knowledge and expressing positive expectations.

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • Tenacious, energised and motivated with a high level of commitment and passion towards achieving quality excellence.

  • Excellent oral, presentation and written communication skills.

  • Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Proven experience writing and maintaining automated test scripts using frameworks such as Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, TestComplete, or equivalent.

  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or coding language (e.g. Python, C#, or JavaScript) for building and maintaining test automation.

  • Experience with automated testing frameworks and integrating them into a CI/CD pipeline.

  • Ability to accurately debug and refactor code within an automated test framework.

  • 3 years of experience as a QA Engineer or in a similar role, with demonstrable automation output.

  • Experience with Agile (Scrum) methodologies.
