About us
You’ve probably heard of Auto Trader, but do you know what we’re all about?
We’re the UK’s leading automotive marketplace, a heritage brand, and a tech darling of the stock market. We bring together vehicle buyers and sellers to give them real choices. Cars may be what we're best known for but we’re also the place for pretty much everything else on wheels, from e-bikes to caravans.
In the automotive world, change is a constant, that’s why we take our job of untangling the complex car-buying journey very seriously.
At our core, we’re all about people. We go our own way while embracing diversity and celebrating our differences. We dedicate ourselves to the idea that we work better together.
Auto Trader is a beautiful, surprising and vibrant place to work. We might not be for everyone, but we could be perfect for you.
About the job
We are looking for a Product Designer to join our Product and Technology Community in Manchester. This role will involve contributing to product design within cross-functional teams - continuously improving our experiences and building continuity across web and mobile - and offering your design expertise to critical parts of our products and our design system.
In this role, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with creative leads, marketing, product teams, and designers, playing a pivotal role in making the experience better for consumers, customers, and colleagues.
Additionally, you'll work closely with product managers, engineers, researchers, and content designers making significant contributions to the entire design lifecycle. This includes actively participating in design workshops and sprints and designing, prototyping, and testing ideas within your team and in more formal testing environments. You’ll also play a key role in Influencing, persuading, and evangelising our design system and user experience design within your product teams and the wider design team.
We are a very data-driven company at heart, so while working at pace, you’ll have the confidence to make decisions, knowing when to use qualitative or quantitative data and when it’s acceptable to rely on your knowledge and experience. Our work requires us to be flexible so that you can switch from high-level, big-picture thinking to the detail of user stories and UI designs.
Our collaborative approach is key to our success. As part of the broader design discipline, you’ll learn from and help others, identifying and implementing improvements to our work. We want you to give and welcome feedback and critique from other team members and designers to help encourage personal and professional growth.
What we’re looking for
- Experience working in-house or at an agency in a Product Design role.
- Experience in interaction design work, sketches, storyboards, prototypes, and visual design.
- Experience designing user interfaces for digital product development, including effectively using colour, typography, layout, iconography, and motion.
- Appreciation of design systems
- Experience collaborating with designers, developers & QA to bring products to life.
- Good communication & influencing skills and the ability to synthesise different perspectives.
Although not a requirement, useful experience includes:
- Experience with user testing/research and using data to define outcomes and measure improvements.
- Understanding end-to-end UX/product design in a commercial environment - including scoping, researching, prototyping and testing.
- Understanding of front-end development technologies
Benefits
We’re offering a salary of £35,000 – £45,000, plus an additional 10% of your salary awarded to you in shares each year. These awarded shares will become yours in yearly instalments over the next three years, and you can choose to either sell them or keep them as shares. And you'll receive 29 days holiday, plus bank holidays and comprehensive private medical cover.
That’s not all. We have employee pension contributions up to 7%, enhanced family leave provisions, a car salary sacrifice scheme, share-save options, and much more.
We always want to give you the support you need and help prioritise your wellbeing, that’s why we provide access to 24/7 online GP and dentist, as well as specialist support for assisted fertility, gender dysphoria, menopause, period care plans and lots more.
On top of all that, our hybrid model, Connected Working, combines the best of both worlds – office and home working. You’ll have two fixed weekly office days for team collaboration and one more of your choice to suit your work-life balance.
Additionally, during July and August, along with two weeks in December, we have our remote first periods. During these times, you can work remotely, whether that's from another location in the UK or even from certain locations abroad.
