First Line Control Specialist
Location: Hybrid/Remote
Contract: Permanent

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Control Specialist to join the First Line Controls Team within operations. This role is central to embedding a robust control environment across the business, ensuring that risks are effectively identified, assessed, and mitigated through strong control design and oversight.

The successful candidate will work closely with business units and second line risk partners to support the implementation and continuous improvement of the control framework, including Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA), incident and event management, and control testing and validation. This role requires a strong understanding of operational risk, regulatory expectations, and control best practices.

Key responsibilities
  • Collaborate with business units to identify and assess operational risks and ensure appropriate mitigation strategies are in place

  • Support the design, implementation, and monitoring of key controls across operational processes.

  • Conduct control testing and assurance activities to validate control effectiveness.

  • Maintain and update risk and control registers, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

  • Provide guidance and support to first line teams on control standards, risk management practices, and regulatory expectations.

  • Assist in the development and delivery of control-related reporting to senior management and governance committees.

  • Liaise with second and third line functions (Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit) to support integrated risk management.

  • Contribute to incident and issue management processes, including root cause analysis and remediation tracking.

About you
  • Proven experience in a risk, controls, or assurance role within the insurance or financial services sector.

  • Strong understanding of operational risk management frameworks and control design principles.

  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements relevant to insurance (e.g., FCA, PRA).

  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and identify trends.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Proficiency in risk and control tools/systems (e.g RCSA).
