The RoleAs a Backend Web Developer, you will play a central role in designing, building and maintaining the backend systems that underpin our digital products. Working collaboratively with colleagues across technology and the wider business, you will help deliver secure, reliable and scalable services that support our member‑facing applications.
In this role, you will contribute to the development and ongoing improvement of backend functionality that enables our members to self‑serve and confidently manage their pension accounts. Your work will focus on ensuring high levels of performance, resilience and security, providing seamless and dependable services that meet both technical standards and user expectations.
You will take ownership of backend components throughout the development lifecycle, from design and implementation through to maintenance and enhancement. By applying effective practices and a continuous improvement mindset, you will help ensure our digital platforms remain robust, future‑ready and aligned to the needs of our members.
The PersonThe successful candidate will be an experienced backend web developer with expertise in designing and building robust, scalable backend services using C# and the Microsoft .NET Framework/Core. You will be confident working with SQL databases, APIs, service‑based architectures and modern development practices, using Microsoft Visual Studio and Git or similar version control systems to deliver secure, high‑quality solutions.
You will have a good understanding of authentication and authorisation, with a clear focus on security, performance and reliability. An analytical mindset and attention to detail will enable you to identify issues, drive improvements and ensure backend systems effectively support member‑facing digital products.
Experience working in Microsoft Azure environments, including Functions, App Services, storage solutions and Service Fabric, would be advantageous, alongside familiarity with CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions. Experience of Agile or Scrum delivery, supported by tools such as Jira, is also desirable.
You will be a collaborative team player, able to work closely with frontend developers, product owners and wider technology colleagues to deliver well‑integrated solutions. Strong communication skills, a willingness to share knowledge and a proactive approach to continuous improvement will be essential. Above all, you will be motivated by building dependable systems that enable members to self‑serve and manage their pension with confidence.
