About the role: 

We are looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to help build and own core microservices across our platform. This is a hands-on development role focused on services that support call treatment orchestration, brand data, analytics, and billing. 

 

You’ll work within a hexagonal, event-driven architecture and collaborate closely with engineering teams across First Orion to develop scalable, reliable services that support carrier-grade communication solutions. 

 

This is an individual contributor role with no direct people management responsibilities.      

 

What you'll do: 

  • Build, enhance, and own core microservices across the First Orion platform 

  • Develop services supporting call treatment orchestration, brand data, analytics, and billing 

  • Design and implement solutions using hexagonal and event-driven architecture patterns 

  • Build scalable, reliable backend services using Java and Spring Boot 

  • Work with relational databases, caching technologies, and event-streaming platforms 

  • Contribute to technical design decisions and help improve the reliability and maintainability of services 

  • Troubleshoot issues and support services throughout the development lifecycle 

  • Collaborate with distributed engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions 
      

What you'll need: 

  • 5+ years of professional backend or software engineering experience 

  • Strong experience with Java 21 

  • Experience building services with Spring Boot 

  • Experience with Gradle using Kotlin DSL 

  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL 

  • Experience working with Redis and Kafka 

  • Understanding of microservice and event-driven architecture 

  • Experience designing, building, testing, and supporting production services 

  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills 

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, distributed environment 

 

Nice to have: 

  • Experience designing cloud-agnostic applications 

  • Familiarity with hexagonal architecture, including ports and adapters 

  • Experience with MinIO or S3-compatible object storage 

  • Experience using Vault or similar secrets-management tools 

  • Experience building high-throughput or low-latency systems 

  • Telecommunications or real-time call-flow experience 

 

While the position primarily follows local business hours in the employee's country of employment, occasional flexibility may be required to support planned maintenance activities, project implementations, and service escalations across time zones.  

 

This position may be based in either the United Kingdom or Dubai, UAE. 

  • For UK-based employees, the salary range for this position is £30,800 - £54,100, depending on experience 

  • Compensation for UAE-based employees will be discussed during the recruitment process and will depend on experience
